Read on to discover 3 important facts about it!

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), it is estimated that each year

more than 1.4 million new cases are diagnosed worldwide

, a figure that highlights its importance. The probability of suffering from this type of cancer increases considerably after the age of 50. If prostate cancer is detected at an early stage, treatment is much more likely to be successful. That is why it is so important to perform

early detection tests

, such as digital rectal examination or prostate-specific antigen (PSA) analysis.

Early Detection of Prostate Cancer as a Key Factor

Early detection is key to curing prostate cancer, as identifying it in its initial stages significantly increases the chances of successful treatment.

It is advisable for men over 50, or those with a family history of the disease, to speak with their doctor about existing screening tests and to undergo them regularly. These include the PSA test and the digital rectal exam. If this applies to you, consider these tests and discuss the possibility of undergoing them with your doctor.

The prostate-specific antigen test measures the level of PSA in the blood, which is a protein produced by prostate cells. It is normally found at a low level, so an increase can be an indicator to monitor.
The PSA test is used as an early detection system, although it is true that after an elevated result, it must be supplemented with other tests such as a biopsy to determine the diagnosis, since an increase in PSA can also be due to other causes, not only prostate cancer.

The digital rectal exam is a physical examination performed by a urologist to assess the health of the prostate. The objectives of this test include detecting an abnormal size, nodules or lumps, or a variation in its texture.
Although this exam is not as precise as other diagnostic tests, it can be a way to detect abnormalities quickly and easily, and can initiate the procedure for other subsequent tests.

What Advances Have Been Made So Far?

Fortunately, medical research continues to advance in the field of prostate cancer. New targeted therapies have been developed, as well as more precise and less invasive treatments.

Hormone therapy, radiotherapy, and surgery are common treatment options, but innovative approaches such as immunotherapy and gene therapy are also being explored.

These advances offer significant improvements in patients’ quality of life and an increase in survival.

Which FERO Grants Have Investigated This Type of Cancer?

IRONMAN Project – Dr. Joaquín Mateo

This pioneering project in prostate cancer has created an international platform of clinical and molecular data from patients with this type of cancer to better understand the disease and act effectively against it. In addition, it has led to new projects and collaborations, providing new approaches to address the study of prostate cancer. These include:

Development of an artificial intelligence tool by Dr. Mateo’s team, which will analyze biopsies to identify biomarkers and guide treatments.

Studies to detect tumor DNA, RNA, and proteins in blood, with the aim of creating a liquid biopsy assay that diagnoses and predicts relapses.

Research on communication between immune and tumor cells to improve response to immunotherapies.

Undoubtedly, the IRONMAN project is a great example of scientific advancement, establishing a basis for further studies in the field of molecular medicine.

XVI FERO Grant, received in 2019 – Dr. Joaquín Mateo

This project has focused on discovering whether a liquid biopsy analysis integrating circulating tumor cells (CTCs), circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA), and exosomal tumor DNA (exoDNA) is effective as a non-invasive prognostic and predictive method in prostate cancer.

The main objective has been to improve clinical outcomes with more precise and personalized care through non-invasive analyses.

III FERO-ASEICA Aid, received in 2022 – Dr. Eduard Porta

This project aims to improve the efficacy of oncological treatments for patients with the most aggressive type of prostate cancer: muscle-invasive.

Through cutting-edge technologies, such as spatial transcriptomics and artificial intelligence, the cellular program of ecosystem components can be understood and located in relation to the tumor, to create algorithms for predicting treatment efficacy.

Thanks to knowledge, we can continue to advance in the world of science and medicine to provide more and more answers and treatments to those diagnosed with cancer. That is why translational research, in which the patient is the fundamental part, is so important.

By supporting FERO, you also support research into this and many other types of cancer.
