Nor will it be able to tell you worldwide.
It will simply tell you that the number is much lower than the women who die from breast cancer. This is because, as of today, only Australia and Uganda know the real incidence in their countries. Breast cancer in men is an invisible disease, though not rare, affecting 1 in 1,000 men, as opposed to 1 in 8 women. These figures translate into very little knowledge and awareness of the disease in men.

Epidemiological and molecular knowledge is essential, obviously not so that we can use ChatGPT, but so that we can provide answers to patients during difficult times, such as a diagnosis. To be able to explain what support they have and what options are available to them to live at least a few more years with a good quality of life.

Coinciding with Father’s Day, a day when men are the focus, the INVI Association and FERO wish to raise awareness about this disease, which represents between 1% and 2% of breast cancer cases and has a very low survival rate.

Currently, the scarcity of knowledge about this disease results in a grim prognosis for patients, who are often diagnosed in advanced stages, lacking effective therapeutic options.

“It is an invisible cancer. This pioneering initiative in Spain prospectively collects and analyzes clinical data and biological samples from around 800 patients.

The registry’s objective is to gather more substantiated evidence on how breast cancer in men is being addressed.

“At GEICAM, we have launched this research project with the aim of identifying tools that allow clinicians to specifically guide treatment in early and advanced stages of the disease and with which we can offer male patients the best possible diagnosis and treatment,” explains Dr. Ander Urruticoechea, medical oncologist and one of the project’s principal investigators.

Furthermore, GEICAM has established a valuable biobank of samples that will enable translational research studies to identify the molecular causes of this disease. The first data extracted from this Registry, presented during the 46th San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium (SABCS) in Texas, USA, reveal that 18% of male patients have mutations in the hereditary risk genes BRCA1 and BRCA2. In the coming months, new results from this study will be presented at national and international conferences, as well as in scientific publications.

“With studies like these, male breast cancer patients will be able to access personalized medicine, which will allow us to have better survival and quality of life,”
Marius Soler

At FERO, we are committed to continuing to support research into this pathology, and we will only achieve this if our community joins us.
