FERO Cancer Researches All Types of Cancer.
Cancer is not one disease. It is more than 200 distinct diseases. FERO Cancer’s project selection is not based on a predetermined area. It responds to scientific criteria: the real probability of clinical impact.
Currently active areas include breast cancer, lung cancer, leukemias and lymphomas, pediatric tumors, and other oncological pathologies. However, this may change. What does not change is the criterion: the best science, for the patients who need it most.
Breast cancer

Thanks to research, breast cancer survival has significantly improved. Molecular diagnosis now allows for the identification of tumor subtypes that respond differently to treatments. Precision medicine makes it possible to design therapies adapted to each tumor’s profile.
FERO Cancer funds breast cancer research at VHIO, Hospital 12 de Octubre, and Clínic Barcelona. Active areas include molecular diagnosis, targeted therapies, treatment resistance, and precision medicine.
Dr. Aleix Prat, an international expert in breast cancer, is part of FERO Cancer’s scientific advisory committee.
Lung Cancer

For decades, lung cancer has been one of the tumors with the poorest prognosis. The advent of immunotherapy and targeted therapies for specific molecular alterations has significantly improved the survival of certain patient subgroups. Translational research is key to extending these benefits to as many patients as possible.

Leukemias and Lymphomas

Malignant hematological diseases represent a very heterogeneous group of tumors affecting the blood, bone marrow, and lymphatic system. Translational research in this field has produced some of the most spectacular advances in recent oncology, with the development of cellular therapies like CAR-T and new immunotherapies.
FERO Cancer funds research projects on hematological tumors in the centers it collaborates with, focusing on molecular diagnosis and the development of new therapeutic strategies.
Pediatric Tumors

Cancer is the leading cause of death by disease in children over one year old in Spain. The most common pediatric tumors — leukemias, central nervous system tumors, neuroblastoma, Wilms tumor — have specific biological characteristics that require their own lines of research.
Research in pediatric oncology is one of the great challenges of current medicine. The rarity of many childhood tumors makes it difficult to develop clinical trials with a sufficient number of patients. Collaboration between centers and investment in basic and translational research are fundamental for progress.
FERO Cancer funds research into pediatric tumors as part of its commitment to all types of cancer, regardless of their frequency or profitability as a research area.
Other Types of Cancer

FERO Cancer’s project selection does not exclude any type of tumor. Colorectal cancer, gastric cancer, ovarian cancer, prostate cancer, melanoma, gynecological tumors, central nervous system tumors — any oncological area can be eligible for funding if the proposal meets the scientific criteria of excellence and translational potential.
In FERO Cancer’s 25-year history, funded projects have covered more than 15 different types of tumors. The breadth of scope is part of the philosophy: translational research cannot be limited to the most common or visible areas. Less frequent cancers also deserve the best science.
