Scientific research in oncology operates in three phases. Basic research studies the biological mechanisms of cancer: how it originates, how it grows, how it spreads. Clinical research tests treatments in patients through controlled trials. Translational research connects the two: it takes laboratory findings and converts them into clinical hypotheses that can be tested in patients.
It is the most difficult link to fund. Public funds concentrate on basic research. The pharmaceutical industry enters the clinical phase when success is already near. The middle space—where the first patient trials are designed, where biomarkers are selected, where it is decided whether a line deserves to continue—is the space where FERO Cancer Foundation works.
This is the model that Dr. Josep Baselga founded in 2001 and that FERO Cancer Foundation has developed over 25 years.

Economic Impact
Translational research is also an economic investment in the health system.
The economic impact of translational oncology research goes beyond the cost of funded projects. A molecular diagnosis that allows selection of the correct treatment from the outset avoids ineffective chemotherapy cycles, reduces hospitalizations due to toxicity, and improves the patient’s quality of life during treatment.
Precision medicine, which is the central objective of the research funded by FERO Cancer Foundation, reduces the overall cost of oncology treatment by concentrating resources on therapies that have the highest probability of working for each specific patient.
Investment in translational research is not an expense. It is the smartest commitment that can be made to a more efficient and fairer health system.
