FERO Cancer Info Day 2027
In September, FERO Cancer will hold an online information session to present the upcoming grant calls and answer questions about the application process.

FERO Cancer calls are open to researchers from any Spanish institution working in translational oncology research. Selection criteria are scientific, not institutional. What matters is the quality of the project and the researcher’s potential.

FERO Grants
FERO Grants. Spain’s most rigorous programme for supporting research talent.
FERO Grants exist because translational cancer research needs researchers who can devote themselves to it on a sustained basis, without the clinical and administrative pressures that hinder scientific work in the early years of a career.
A FERO grant does exactly that: it gives the researcher the time and resources to do good science. Without distractions. With the support of an institution that believes in their work.
Four grant categories
Who for: Researchers with exceptional potential to become leaders in oncology research.
Field: Cancer (any type).
Academic profile: Between 15 and 5 years since PhD defence.
Track record: Emerging: competitive funding in the last 3 years or an institutional letter of support.
Funding: €100,000 for 2 years
Who for: Physician-scientists with exceptional potential to lead translational research.
Field: Cancer (any type).
Academic profile: Between 15 and 5 years since PhD defence.
Track record: Emerging: competitive funding in the last 3 years or an institutional letter of support.
Funding: €100,000 for 3 years
Who for: Disruptive researchers with careers dedicated to translational research.
Field: Breast cancer or paediatric cancer.
Academic profile: Established: more than 5 years leading a group, several competitive grants.
Funding: €100,000 for 2 years.
All grants assess: impact on the applicant’s career, innovative research, potential impact on clinical practice, scientific basis, and candidate suitability.
Baselga Grant
FERO Dr Baselga Grant. The founder’s legacy, in the hands of the best.
Josep Baselga firmly believed that research is the only way to cure cancer. The grant that bears his name carries on that legacy: it supports established oncology researchers who have the capacity to lead the most significant scientific advances in the coming years.
The grant in numbers
Criteria: Innovative research, potential impact on clinical practice, scientific basis, applicant suitability.
Field: Cancer (any type).
Academic profile: exceptional leaders in oncology research with major clinical impact.
Funding: €300,000 for 3 years
The first five Dr Baselga Grants have been awarded to Drs Ignacio Melero, Marta Alonso, Luis Álvarez-Vallina, Jaume Mora, and Gabriel Rabinovich. Projects that promise to make a significant difference in cancer treatment.

Guidelines and requirements
Guidelines and requirements for FERO Grants.
General requirements for all categories
The candidate must be affiliated with a research institute in Spain at the time of application, or submit a letter of support from the institution where the project will be carried out.
It is not necessary to be employed at the time of submission if an institutional letter of support is attached.
The proposed research must fall within the field of translational oncology, with demonstrable potential for clinical impact.
Evaluation process
Applications are evaluated by the FERO Cancer Grants Jury, made up of members of the Scientific Advisory Committee and external reviewers of recognised international prestige.
The process is completely confidential. Candidates are informed of the outcome of their application once the evaluation process has been completed.
The evaluation criteria are published in the guidelines for each call and are applied with full transparency.
