Scientific Career

Scientific Career

FERO Cancer supports researchers at every stage of their career.

From the early postdoctoral years to establishing an independent research group. FERO Cancer has a program for every stage.

The scientific career is long and challenging. The first years after the doctorate are especially critical: the researcher needs funding, visibility, and a support network to establish themselves in a highly competitive ecosystem. FERO Cancer exists to make that stage as productive as possible.

Professional Development

Professional Development. More than funding.

A FERO fellowship is not just money. It is mentoring, networking, visibility in the scientific community, and access to Spain's leading researchers.

FERO Cancer’s support for the professional development of its researchers goes beyond the financial endowment of the fellowship. The FERO Academy provides ongoing training in skills that doctoral programs do not cover: scientific communication, project management, team leadership, fundraising. Informal mentoring through the FERO alumni network is one of the least visible but most valuable assets of the community. A young researcher who needs advice on how to submit a proposal to a European call, how to negotiate a contract with a hospital, or how to build their public profile has people in the FERO network who have been through the same experience.

Young Talent

Young Talent. FERO Cancer's most profitable investment.

More than 5 million euros invested in young researchers since 2009. The return on that investment is measured in decades: today's fellows are tomorrow's scientific leaders.

The early career years are the time when the scientific habits that will define a researcher for the rest of their trajectory are formed. Adequate funding at that moment allows the young researcher to choose projects based on their scientific potential, not on their immediate fundability.

FERO Cancer invests in young talent because that is where the impact of every euro is greatest. An established researcher has multiple funding sources. A young researcher with a brilliant project may have none.

The “feritos” — the name by which the community knows FERO Cancer fellows — are the most representative group of what FERO Cancer can achieve. They are proof that investing in young talent with rigorous scientific criteria produces extraordinary results.

FERO Scientific Retreat

FERO Scientific Retreat. The annual gathering of the FERO scientific community.

Every FERO researcher has a story. A project that changed the course of their career. A result that reached patients. Here are their profiles.

The FERO Scientific Retreat was born in 2020 — virtually, out of pandemic necessity — and has become one of the landmark events of the oncology research community in Spain. Each edition has strengthened the bonds among researchers and expanded the impact of the FERO Cancer network.

2020
Virtual

The first edition, born out of necessity, demonstrated that the FERO community was stronger than the circumstances.

2021
Barcelona

The first in-person edition. A return to face-to-face scientific exchange.

2022
Zaragoza

The Retreat reaches new institutions and new perspectives.

2023
Madrid

The community grows with a more robust program.

2024
Pamplona

First edition with expanded workshops and patient testimonials.

2025
Valencia

A new standard of scientific excellence and community engagement.

2026
Barcelona

25 years of FERO science. Fundació Carulla, May 12 and 13.

The Retreat includes scientific presentations of ongoing projects, group work sessions, professional development workshops, and community moments that build the network of relationships that endures beyond the event.

Recognition

Recognition of FERO researchers. Excellence recognized beyond Spain.

Researchers who have been part of FERO Cancer have received some of the most important awards in Spanish and international oncology. It is the best indicator of the impact of selection based on excellence criteria.

A FERO fellowship does not only fund research. It also positions the researcher in the scientific community. Evaluators of national and international calls recognize the FERO seal as a guarantee of quality. And that recognition translates into more funding, more visibility, and more impact. FERO Cancer alumni fellows have received funding from the European Research Council, the Instituto de Salud Carlos III, the AECC, and some of Spain’s most important private scientific foundations. They have published in the highest-impact oncology journals. And some have made the leap to leadership positions at leading international centers. That is the real return on FERO Cancer’s investment in young talent. It is not measured in publications. It is measured in careers.
