As part of Mary Kay’s “Pink Changes Lives” campaign, the cosmetics brand that has been enriching women’s lives for 60 years has launched the Heart Brush to contribute, together with the FERO Foundation, to breast cancer research.
For each Heart Brush purchased, Mary Kay will donate €1 to the search for new discoveries for this type of cancer.
Breast cancer facts:
Breast cancer is considered the most common cancer and the leading cause of death in women aged 25 to 55. According to 2020 data, it affects 516,827 women in Spain alone, reaching 2.1 million in Europe and nearly 7.8 million women worldwide. SEOM estimates that 35,000 cases will be diagnosed in 2023.
In order to reverse these figures, it is important to allocate resources to research to improve patients’ quality of life and to be able to offer effective cancer treatments. To date, research has already confirmed that this is more than a necessary path to achieve that goal. In recent years, the breast cancer mortality rate has improved significantly, but there is still a long way to go.
Breast cancer is estimated to affect 1 in 8 women in Spain over their lifetime.
Support the fight against cancer with Mary Kay’s Heart Brush:
There are many ways to support the fight against cancer. Today, thanks to the initiative by Mary Kay in collaboration with the FERO Foundation, one more way to help the cause is being added.
The proceeds raised from the sale of each Heart Brush will be used to fund a translational oncology research project led by Dr Ciruelos. She is Coordinator of the Breast Cancer Unit at Hospital 12 de Octubre in Madrid and at HM Hospitals in Madrid. In addition, she is Vice President of the SOLTI breast cancer research group.
Her project focuses on patients with advanced breast cancer and aims to understand which patients respond to certain treatments and to discover the mechanisms of resistance to them.
“This is a translational clinical research project; that is, it brings together the clinical characteristics of a group of patients (those with advanced HER2+ breast cancer, which accounts for 25% of advanced tumours) with the biological characteristics of their tumour and their immune system. We want to identify which patients will respond to treatment, why some develop resistance to treatment, and predict which other drugs may be more effective. Ultimately, we aim to improve patients’ quality of life and reduce unnecessary additional toxicities. It is a project with a high impact on patients and, thanks to Mary Kay and FERO, it is now a reality”, adds Dr Ciruelos.
