1st TransFiERO Fellowship – Dr. Joan Seoane

The development of immunotherapies has led to a significant breakthrough in the treatment of aggressive solid tumors with a poor prognosis. However, many of these tumors are resistant to immunotherapy because they produce molecules that inhibit the immune system.

Dr. Joan Seoane’s team has identified one of these molecules and has generated a drug capable of blocking it. Thus, the project’s objective is to develop this drug to evaluate its efficacy in clinical trials with patients as soon as possible. As a key tool, the team has a new study model based on patient samples that allows them to verify in the laboratory whether the drug works in an environment very similar to that of a real tumor.

Thanks to the TransFiERO Fellowship, sponsored by Agrolimen, the team will be able to initiate the drug production process for clinical use, conduct the necessary toxicity and pharmacology studies, and accelerate its progression to clinical trials.

The team’s hope is that this new therapy can contribute to improving the lives of patients with a dramatic prognosis as soon as possible.
