III FERO Grant – Dr. Laura Soucek

III FERO Grant

Dra. Laura Soucek

Head of Mouse Models of Cancer Therapies, VHIO (Vall d'Hebron Institute of Oncology, Barcelona)
PROJECT
Inhibition of the Myc oncoprotein present in most tumors.
GRANT AMOUNT
€70,000

Myc is a protein that coordinates all the programs that allow a cell to grow and divide and, as such, is involved in almost all types of cancer. Despite the obvious role of Myc in cancer, there is still no drug that inhibits it, and this is precisely the objective of this project.

The FERO grant provided funding for key experiments in the development of what could be the first Myc inhibitor, Omomyc. The studies conducted have shown that Omomyc has a remarkable therapeutic index in all types of cancer tested (skin, lung, pancreatic and, more recently, brain cancer) and that it also does not cause any relevant or severe side effects in normal tissues.
