VIII FERO Grant in Breast Cancer

Dra. María Vidal

Fundació de Recerca Clínic Barcelona - Institut d'Investigacions Biomèdiques August Pi i Sunyer (FRCB-IDIBAPS)
PROJECT
The interruption of breastfeeding as a possible factor in postpartum breast cancer.
GRANT AMOUNT
€100,000

Postpartum breast cancer is an aggressive disease that can occur in young women up to 10 years after their last pregnancy.

The project, funded by FERO Cancer with sponsorship from MANGO, will analyze how the abrupt interruption of breastfeeding can alter the immune system and promote an environment that drives tumor growth. The team led by Dr. María Vidal will analyze immune cells and microorganisms associated with the tumor, as well as other molecular markers, in patient samples with the aim of understanding the biological mechanisms involved in the disease and identifying new prognostic factors and possible prevention and treatment strategies.

The ultimate goal of the project is to improve the stratification of postpartum breast cancer patients to bring personalized medicine closer to affected mothers.
