Many melanoma patients develop brain metastases, a situation that substantially reduces their life expectancy. This project aims to discover vulnerable points in melanoma brain metastases that can be targeted and that will allow for new, more effective treatments.
The study establishes preclinical models of melanoma brain metastases to understand their biology and the evolution of the brain’s immune component during metastasis progression and in response to treatments. Efforts focus on characterizing the interaction between different components of the immune system and melanoma cells in the brain, and determining whether blocking that communication can reduce brain metastasis progression and improve response to therapies.
