FERO’s 2022 activity results

Throughout 2022, FERO Foundation allocated €1.5 million to translational oncology research projects and €400,000 to support young research talent in the field of oncology in Spain.

Once again, the results achieved by the Foundation’s activity make us proud and demonstrate the Foundation’s commitment to a future without cancer—a future in which cancer is not a cause of death.

In today’s post, we will clearly and precisely share—consistent with one of our core values, transparency—the outcome of all the fundraising, awareness, collaboration, and management actions carried out by FERO Foundation during 2022.

Translational research according to the FERO community:

+ €1.5 MILLION

FOR TRANSLATIONAL RESEARCH PROJECTS

FERO Foundation raises funds and finances translational oncology research projects at different research centres across Spain, with the aim of bringing us closer to a cure for cancer and benefiting cancer patients as soon as possible.

Several studies are currently still underway, such as the Advanced Molecular Diagnostics Programme (DIAMAV), the Precision Medicine in Oncology Project, and the IRONMAN Registry.

In total, during 2022, more than €1.5 million was raised for these types of projects.

2 CHARITY GALAS

AS PART OF THE FERO GRANTS AWARD CEREMONY

With the aim of raising funds in support of translational oncology research, FERO Foundation organises two charity galas each year—one in Barcelona and the other in Madrid. Several hundred people attend these galas, whose main objective is fundraising for translational oncology research projects, and they also serve as the setting for the presentation of the FERO Grants, aimed at young researchers.

The charity dinner, held as part of the 22nd FERO Grants in 2022, was a very special edition—not only because it was the first after two years without being held due to the pandemic, but also because our founder, Dr Baselga, was honoured together with his family.

1 DR BASELGA GRANT

TO PROMOTE EXCELLENCE IN TRANSLATIONAL RESEARCH

In 2022, we launched the Dr Baselga Grant. With a contribution of €300,000, it supports early-career investigators on the path to consolidation and projects with a strong clinical applicability component. It is a tribute to Dr Baselga, founder of FERO and a pioneer in cancer research.

In the words of the Chair of the Scientific Advisory Committee, Dr Josep Tabernero, “this represents a very important step up in quality for FERO and for the scientific community. A substantial grant that will boost major projects and strengthen the research ecosystem in our country”.

5 GRANTS AWARDED

TO YOUNG RESEARCHERS (4 FERO GRANTS, 1 FERO-ASEICA GRANT) AND 2 BREAST CANCER PROJECTS FUNDED

Throughout 2022, 4 FERO Grants, 1 FERO-ASEICA Grant, and 2 Breast Cancer Projects were awarded, in addition to the Dr Baselga Grant mentioned above. The FERO Grants focus on fostering young research talent and disruptive projects to take cancer research one step further.

Considering all the grants awarded, 2022 marked a record for FERO Foundation. Eight researchers were recognised in a single year—an achievement to match or surpass in the future—and €400,000 was allocated to young research talent.

The number of young researchers who have been able to launch their translational oncology research projects thanks to the FERO Grants has now reached 46.

505 MEDIA MENTIONS AND 32 SCIENTIFIC PUBLICATIONS

Lastly, we highlight the increase in media mentions, rising from 379 in 2021 to 505 in 2022. As for scientific publications, there were 32 throughout the year. FERO Foundation’s work is making headlines, and this is thanks to all the partners who are making the Foundation’s growth possible, all the donors who contribute through their donations, and the great team that works day after day to achieve Dr Baselga’s dream: to eradicate cancer as a cause of death.

These are FERO Foundation’s latest figures—help us maintain and/or surpass them. On our website you will find all the information to collaborate with us directly, or email us at fero@fero.org and we will get in touch with you. Thank you very much!
