The European Researchers’ Night is an annual event held in more than 300 European cities with a single purpose: bringing science closer to society.
This year, the FERO Foundation participated in Barcelona, at the Gabriel García Márquez Library, with a round table titled: “Researching in Barcelona: between myths, challenges, and realities.”
Voices that research and transform
The meeting brought together two oncology research leading figures in the city and winners of the 2020 FERO grants:
- Dr. Raquel Pérez-López
- Dr. Toni Celià-Terrassa
The conversation was moderated by Dr. Rubén Ventura Masip, director of the FERO Foundation.
Together they gave an honest, approachable, and humorous talk about what it really means to work in cancer research in a city like Barcelona.
Debunking myths about science
During the panel, several myths about scientific research were debunked, with natural discussion on topics such as:
- The long timeframes required to take a discovery from the laboratory to the clinic.
- The lack of job stability.
- The scarcity of resources.
- And the idealized image of “doing science in Barcelona.”
