What Do People Search on Google About Cancer? (Part 2)

13 April 2023 - 12:33 pm

In the previous publication, we presented three frequent searches about cancer on Google, addressed by different researchers and oncologists.

Is cancer an autoimmune disease? Is cancer genetic? Is cancer a virus?

Below, we answer four more questions about cancer. Discover them!

Is Cancer Curable?

Dr. Cristina Mayor,

Researcher at IRB Barcelona.

Of course, we believe that, through research, cancer can be cured or made chronic, so that one can die with cancer, but not from cancer. It should be noted that cancer is not a single disease, but different types of it. In different types of cancers, curative responses are seen—one example is immunotherapy, a treatment that stimulates the body’s natural defenses to fight cancer. This vision, which may seem futuristic, continues to give hope, because although there are currently many types of cancer about which we lack information to understand how they work and thus cure them, we have also gone through that phase with other types of cancer that we understand better today and have found treatments that work.

Is Cancer Painful?

Dr. Violeta Serra,

Head of the Experimental Therapies Group at Vall d’Hebrón Institute of Oncology (VHIO).

It is a type of disease that arises from our own cellular complexity. Obviously, this has a series of physiological implications that can produce pain. Oncology research strives to prevent cancer from becoming painful and, furthermore, to eradicate it completely.

Is Cancer Hereditary?

Some cancers are, but not all are hereditary. There are cancers that appear in patients who have inherited a mutation from their father or mother, an important piece of information that helps to conduct more intensive monitoring of people with this disease. When this is not known, it is advisable to diagnose it, because this allows for monitoring in their relatives and descendants.

Among the most hereditary cancers are breast cancer and colon cancer. There are cancers that may have a hereditary component that is still unknown, and others are hereditary, but the cause is not known. For both cases, the answer will be found in research.

Is Cancer Contagious?

No, it is not a contagious disease. It can develop in tissues that have suffered a disease of contagious origin, although this does not occur in all types of cancers.

Some viruses increase the incidence of cancer, such as the human papillomavirus in cervical cancer and the hepatitis virus in liver cancer. Therefore, prevention of infection—whether through vaccination, screening, or prevention of transmission—can prevent the occurrence of some cancers.

If you have questions about the disease, FERO Foundation recommends that you always consult your physician.
